Frequently asked questions
We try to let the horses get the maximum amount of time outside during the winter as possible. That means they go out first thing in the morning after eating, and come in right before dark. In extreme storms and below freezing temperatures they'll stay inside.
We only provide basic feed as part of the boarding package. You'll need to provide any supplements or special feed for your horse. We can accommodate any needs your horse may require. Please be sure to give us as many details about your horse's feeding habits as possible.
Our farrier comes every 8 weeks. If you prefer your horse to have shoes or if your horse has special needs, please let us know so we can make sure they're met.
We use Perry Vet from Perry, New York. We have alternative options if you want a second opinion or if you have your own preference. We're also roughly 2 hours from Cornell for emergency/special care.
Our hay is various types of grasses from our fields. We aim for a first and second cutting each year but of course the yield varies based on the weather each season. If you have a preference you're welcome to provide your own hay.
Money aside, the time involved in ensuring a smooth running facility that covers both safety for everyone involved, as well as stability, is extremely high. Years of experience and generations of horse caregivers and trainers are a crucial component in maintaining efficiency as well as a high standard.
Some of the costs in tangible aspects of the farm include:
- Cost of actual land. We operate on 97 acres, some of which is used for harvesting hay each year, while the rest is spacious pasture for grazing.
- Cost of fence building and maintenance. Weather hazards, local wildlife, and time all make fencing a never-ending project.
- Running water, electric, gas costs.
- Land maintenance, such as bush hogging, weed removal, overgrowth removal from fenceline, etc.
- Equipment costs and maintenance. Tractors, bushhog, manure spreader, hay machinery, small equipment such as chainsaws, tools, etc.
- Barn maintenance
- Facilities for storing hay, equipment, etc.
- Water troughs, hay feeders, buckets, hoses, brushes, grooming supplies, etc.
- Bedding and hay. When our own hay runs out, we do sometimes need to buy additional hay for the winter. We also use straw or your other preference for bedding.
- Monthly grain bill. Horses that are hard keepers or that require additional nutrients besides hay will require daily feeding, especially in the winter months.
- Property taxes
- Boarding and commercial liability insurance
- Salary for caretakers: stall cleaning, horse care, feeding, cleaning buckets and troughs, vet and farrier assistance, billing and web work, and communication with clients.
- Monthly utility bills
- Emergency situation preparedness for supplies and repairs
- Farrier costs
